A couple of months ago I wrote this post:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Of course I ended up with exactly none of the things I expected. Instead I got a low-mile 2011 XK-R. Just randomly appeared on the Jag used car lot when I was helping a friend test drive an XC60. They are a ridiculous performance bargain. Had no idea they have 500HP.
Thoughts on the things I test drove:
1. Audi S5 Sportback. I HATE HATE HATE the iPad-on-dash look that so many manufacturers are doing right now, but I did like the way this drove. Not enough autonomous features for a brand new car however. And they quoted me a lease price that Jalopnick’s own Tom McParland reacted to as “bonkers”. N ot in a good way.
2. E400 Coupe. Amazing seats. Super comfortable. Nice to drive. Also drove the ‘vert. If I were 60 I probably would have bought that . Or if the E53 was out yet that would be interesting . Also drove the C43 coupe and convertible but those were far too decontented for the price.
3. Volvo S90 (really because a friend wants to drive it). Didn’t have one to drive, but the new Volvos are very very nice. My friend bought herself an XC60 hybrid and honestly it’s a lot of car for the money.
4. Cadillac CT6 (with Super Cruise). This car is very nice and the Super Cruise is the best autonomous system I have ever used. This includes Tesla. Just amazing. It needs to be in more Caddys. I told the dealer that if they made and ATS-V with the Super Cruise there would be no contest which car I would buy. Unfortunately GM is holding this tech back for some reason.

Those XKs are still gorgeous and they sound fantastic.
How does the transmission hold up though? Does it feel kind of outdated compared to the dual clutches and quicker autos of today?

In dynamic + sport mode, I can’t tell the difference in shift times between this and my old M6GC with DCT. I *can* tell that this car is 100x smoother off the line. I can also tell you anecdotally that if you get on it off the line there is a lot of drama - tire smoke, pulling, great noises - but if you drive it like slightly less of a maniac nice looking women will come up to you and make conversation about the car. This is ... unusual, to say the least.

The XK is so much more elegant than the F-type in person.
Coupe or Cabrio?

Coupe.
I also drove a brand new F-type SVR. Fast, but not a gentleman’s GT car. I think the XK is the spiritual successor to the E-type more than the F-type.

Sounds like a fantastic buy then. Enjoy it!

Coupe was the answer I was hoping to see! Congrats and...

I think it’s a Jag thing - or at least an older Jag thing, I doubt it happens in F types & current XEFJs. My X308 XJR was the only car I’ve ever owned where random women would compliment its looks.

There’s an X308 XJR that parks near me in my parking garage. Just like the E38 7'er they still look great.

Jags are nice. Current C-coupes in AMG trim are dumb. E400 needs more power in the coupe, hopefully the AMG trims aren't dumb like the C's.

I love the 2010+ XKR. Any issues so far?

The touchscreen interface is super outdated. However I do like that Jag installed a button right below the screen that makes it go to a screen saver so you don’t have to look at old graphics while you drive. All manufacturers should do that.

That is nice. Could it handle the occasional HPDE?

Yes, they’re a damn fine piece of design, both inside and out. If not too practical - mine had less interior room than the Golf GTI I replaced it with.
I reckon they’d be a contender for World’s Prettiest Sedan Ever, e specially in black.
Not that I’d kick a Gen2 XKR out of bed, either.

On my E92 I have one of the shortcut buttons programmed to turn the screen off. But the bluetooth is shitty at streaming music from my phone on the first try so I have to twiddle with settings to make it work then forget to shut it off.
